Growing a Stronger Community!

It’s harvest time in the Community Garden, and your help is needed to pick vegetables and start preparing the garden for the upcoming winter season. This year’s volunteers have already donated over 255 lbs. of fresh produce to local food shelves, and we’re on our way to beating last year’s total of 1186 lbs. Gardening dates and hours are:

University of Minnesota Transfer Fair

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 21th from 10:00am and 1:00pm. Representatives from the entire University of MN system (Duluth, Rochester, Twin Cities etc.) and its various colleges (Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Education and more) will be here to answer your questions about potential transfer to the University and its many programs. This large scale event only happens once per year so be sure to make the best of this opportunity. All representatives will be located at tables in the College Center upper level.

OFFICAL: 2014 Annual Security Report Issued

Federal statute 20 U.S.C. §1092 (f), with implementing regulations in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations at 34 C.F.R. 668.46 requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses. Compliance is monitored by the United States Department of Education.

In accordance with the above Federal Law, better known as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, Inver Hills College monitors criminal activity and publishes an annual report, maintaining a three- year statistical history on the Inver Hills College campus and at off campus facilities used by the college or by recognized college organizations.

The annual report contains:

  • Policies Concerning Safety of and Access to Campus Facilities
  • Security Considerations of Campus Facilities
  • Policies Concerning Law Enforcement
  • Educational Programs Regarding Security and Prevention
  • Crime Statistics for the last three years
  • Policies Regarding Illegality of Drug and Alcohol Use on Campus
  • Policy and Procedure Regarding Sexual Assault

Sexual Violence Prevention

Sexual violence on campuses has received significant national attention recently. As we welcome students to Inver Hills this Fall semester, we want to inform students of the college’s commitment to provide a sexual violence free campus.

 

What is Sexual Violence?

Sexual Violence includes a continuum of conduct that includes sexual assault, and non-forcible sex acts, as well as aiding acts of sexual violence.

 

What is Sexual Assault?

Sexual assault as “an actual, attempted or threatened sexual act with another person without that person’s consent. Sexual Assault includes but is not limited to:

  1. Involvement without consent in any sexual act in which there is force, expressed or implied, or use of duress or deception upon the victim. Forced sexual intercourse is also included in this definition, as are the acts commonly referred to as “date rape” or “acquaintance rape.” This definition also includes the coercing, forcing, or attempting to coerce or force sexual intercourse or a sexual act on another.
  2. Involvement in any sexual act when the victim is unable to give consent.
  3. Intentional and unwelcome touching, coercing, forcing or attempting to coerce or force another to touch a person’s intimate parts (defined as primary genital area, groin, inner tight, buttocks, or breast.)
  4. Offensive sexual behavior that is directed at another such as indecent exposure or voyeurism.”

 

Sexual assault is often a criminal act that can be prosecuted under Minnesota law, as well as form the basis for discipline under Minnesota State Colleges and Universities student conduct codes and employee disciplinary standards.

 

What are Non-Forcible Sex Acts?

Non-forcible acts include unlawful sexual acts where consent is not relevant, such as sexual contact with an individual under the statutory age of consent, as defined by Minnesota law, or between persons who are related to each other within degrees wherein marriage is prohibited by law.

 

To Whom and When Does Inver Hills’ and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities’ Sexual Violence Policy Apply?

This policy applies to:

 

  1. The conduct of all Inver Hills students and employees when they are on college property or participating in any Inver Hills course or sponsored activity.
  2. The conduct of individuals who are not Inver Hills students or employees who come on college sites.
  3. The off-campus conduct of students and employees if it results in a hostile educational or work environment for Inver Hills students or employees.

 

What if I Experience a Sexual Assault?

 

  1. Go to a safe place.
  2. If you are on campus, contact the Inver Hills Public Safety Office at (651) 450-3711 or any of the following employees:

College Center 115.

 

  1. Do not bathe, douche, use the toilet, or change clothing. Timely and prompt reporting of a sexual assault within 72 hours is critical in preserving evidence important in proving a criminal case against the assailant.
  2. Seek medical attention immediately regardless of whether you report the matter to the police. Local hospitals include:

  • Woodwinds Hospital, 1925 Woodwinds Dr., Woodbury, MN 55125; (651) 232-0228

 

  1. You may file a police report with the appropriate law enforcement agency. For on campus incidents contact the Inver Grove Heights Police Department at 911, or the non-emergency dispatch number at (651) 322-2323. Contact the Inver Hills Public Safety Office at (651) 450-3711 or Public Safety Director Tom McCluney at (651) 450-3528 if you would like assistance filing a police report.
  2. Contact any of the following for support, assistance and referral:

 

  • Inver Hills Counseling Department located on the 2nd floor of the College Center, (651) 450-3508
  • 360 Community-Sexual Assault Services 24 hour crisis line (651) 405-1500
  • Sexual Offense Services, Ramsey County 24 Hour crisis line (651) 643-3006.

 

  1. You may request that the college make arrangements to reduce contact between you and the alleged assailant, such as attempt to provide a change in classes and/or academic schedules, working arrangements, or other appropriate remedial measures. These options are available regardless of whether the victim chooses to report the crime to law enforcement or campus authorities.

 

  1. You have the right to petition for an Order for Protection (OFP) or a Harassment Restraining Order (HRO). Inver Hills’ Public Safety Department has information available on how to file for and request an OFP or HRO.

 

  1. You may contact the Minnesota Crime Victims Reparations Board at (651) 201-7300 which provides financial help to victims and their families for losses incurred as a result of a violent crime. You may also visit https://dps.mn.gov for additional information.

Early Alert Program & Official Email Information

The Early Alert program is designed to promote student success through communication between students, instructors, and advisors. If an instructor feels that you are experiencing difficulties in a course (in terms of assignments, test scores, participation, or attendance), you may receive an email message through the Early Alert program.

The email message will tell you if your instructor has concerns about your attendance or academic progress and will prompt you to seek out your instructor. The message will also include a list of college resources available to you and steps you can take to improve your progress. Review your instructor’s recommendations carefully and take action in a timely fashion—it’s key to your success! These Early Alert emails will be sent to your preferred personal email account. If you do not open your Early Alert email, a letter will be mailed to your home address.

Please read your email frequently as email is the official form of communication for Inver Hills Community College.  You can often eliminate follow-up emails, calls and letters by viewing and downloading images on all emails from Inver Hills Community College. It is important to click the “Download Images” or “View Images” button in the header of IHCC emails as this action converts an email’s status from “Not-Viewed” to “Viewed”. The college staff works together to ensure your email communications are timely, targeted and relevant; be sure to read ALL your emails. You may update your personal email address by logging on to E-Services, clicking Account Management, then Demographic Info.

The Bookstore crew is extending hours just to serve you…

We will be open Monday-Thursday (Aug 25-28) from 8am-6pm and Friday (Aug 29) from 8am-4pm.  Please bring in your school ID and your class schedule.  We will be able to assist you in finding your required books and supplies.  Semester-long College GO TO Bus Passes are now available to students for $115 (again, class schedule and college ID required).  Don’t forget to check out our new clothing.  Hope to see you soon!
