The Seagull
by Anton Chekhov
A New Version Translated by Tom Stoppard
Directed by George M. Roesler
“Imagine a beautiful lake. A young girl who’s spent her life beside it. She loves the lake, she’s happy; she’s free – like a seagull. Then a man comes along, sees her, and destroys her.”
Irena Arkadina, a famous actress, presides over a household wracked with desperate love, with dreams of success and dread of failure. Her son Konstantin is an aspiring avant-garde theatre director and playwright who dreams of creating a new art form. However, his unrequited love for Nina, “the seagull” of the play’s title, devastates his spirit. Similarly, a variety of other characters must confront their unfulfilled dreams, shimmering like elusive reflections in the nearby lake.
The universal themes and truths about human relationships, found in Chekhov’s works again and again in varying combinations, vividly bring to life what happens when the object of one’s obsession – be it fame, talent, or another human being – is simply and irrefutably unattainable.
