Scholarship opportunity for students to attend the Sociologists of Minnesota Fall Conference

Special News Announcement

The Inver Hills Community Foundation has agreed to scholarship the registration fee for IHCC students to attend the Sociologists of Minnesota’s Annual Conference which will be held at Inver Hills Community on Thursday and Friday, October 9 and 10, 2014. In order for students to obtain this scholarship funding, they should fill out a pre-registration form and email it to Sheila Lindstrom at Sheila.Lindstrom@anokaramsey.edu indicating that they are IHCC students before October 9, 2014. This pre-registration form can be obtained from Human Services and Sociology Instructor, Vicky Knickerbocker.

This year’s Conference Theme explores how sociological thinking can enhance our ability to understand and adapt to the changes and challenges of living in the 21st century. This conference will feature a number of guest presentations that will address the issue of human sexual trafficking which is more of a haunting occurrence in Minnesota than most students commonly assume. “Did you know that between 8,000and 12, 000 people are estimated to be involved in sexual trafficking/prostitution in Minnesota every day?” and that “The average age of a girl’s entry into sexual trafficking/prostitution is between 12 and 14 years of age?”

Danielle, Kluz, will be our featured Guest Speaker from Breaking Free, a non-profit organization in St. Paul dedicated to ending sexual trafficking and the exploitation of women and girls.

Her keynote presentation will be take place on Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This conference will begin at 11:30 am on Thursday, October 9, 2014.

If you want to learn more about the local impact of human sex trafficking and ways that you can help make a positive difference, please plan to attend this conference. If you would like further information about this conference, please contact Human Services and Sociology Instructor, Vicky Knickerbocker by email at vknicke@inverhills.edu or by phone at 651-450-3745.

Discussion topics include:
• What would you like to see faculty use for affordable learning resource alternatives? (example: online web sources, interactive web sites, course packets, e-Books, access codes, etc.)
• What types of choices do you make regarding textbook costs (drop a class because the book is too expensive, don’t purchase a book because you can’t afford it, etc.)?
• What kinds of learning resource alternatives have you used in classes and why do you like/dislike it?
• How does the cost of textbooks effect your success?

If you are interested, please stop in to the Bookstore and talk to Dawn Master, Bookstore Manager or call her at 651-450-3247.
