Honoring Excellent Students

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year college students. Students who qualify are invited to become members and participate with in our induction ceremony each year. Phi Theta Kappa members are honored for their academic accomplishments, and are also able to join other chapter members in a variety of events and projects each year.  During the induction, we hope to honor the achievements of our new members, the faculty they chose to nominate for a Golden Apple Award, and the family and friends which make a support system for each new member.

English is my second language, and it was hard to understand my accent, but I had big desire to learn. First I registered to certificate class, but right now I almost completed diploma, and I am working to transfer for BA degree. When I didn’t believed on myself they believed on me, and they changed me. Generally I encouraged and helped by Dr Harold and Scott.

Harold Torrence

Harold is a Business Management Instructor at Dakota County Technical College. Read what our students had to say about him and why he deserves this award:

I would like to nominate Mr. Harold Torrence because when I first came to DCTC, I didn't speak fluently English (I am still struggling but I improved a lot), it was Mr. Torrence my advisor and he was the one who advised me to enroll in my major. He helped me a lot in building my self-confidence by encouraging me all the way. I remember at the beginning of my first semester I was so afraid that I won't make it because of the language barrier and I shared my concerns with him. He told me his own history and made me believe in myself telling me that I can do it. It changes everything and I will be forever grateful for his help.

MIlissa Troen

Milissa is a counselor at Inver Hills Community College. She was nominated twice for a Golden Apple Award this semester. Read what our students had to say about her below.

"As my first instructor at Inver Hills Ms. Troen believed in me when I was unsure of myself. She encouraged me to sign up for more credits than I thought I could handle. She expressed the value of getting involved in clubs and activities and Phi Theta Kappa. Now I am the Legislative Director for Student Senate. Last spring I took a Service trip to Camp Restore in Detroit with the VIBE Club to do Asset Based Community Service. I am on the Bees Knees committee, advocating for pollinators. Ms. Troen helped me step outside of my comfort zone while gauging my interest in pursuit of a major that will uniquely fit me. She has also been there when I had struggles and continues to support me in my academic planning and progress. "

Fall 2020
"I had Milissa as an instructor my first semester as an official college student. I enjoyed having her as my instructor so much that I continued to see her for counseling services whenever, whenever I needed to make changes to my academic planning. She has been extremely helpful in my time at Inver, helping me in my decision of what to major in. I had a lot of confusion at first, about why I should be doing social work when my end goal was psychology, but she helped me to understand that. She has always pushed me to do my best and encouraged me when I thought I wasn't going to succeed. She always knew I would get the grade I wanted, but still told me that it was OK if I didn't. She has not only been an awesome help academically, but emotionally. She has been there for me in times when I was really struggling and told me it was OK to take breaks and ask for help. She is someone who didn't just treat her job like a job. She has been compassionate, caring, and understanding. Thank you Milissa! I appreciate everything you have done to help me and I'm so glad you were here to get me this far. You never gave up hope on me, even when I gave up hope on myself."
